Functional Programming in Austin, Texas

About Me

My name is Chance Coble. I work and live in Austin, Texas. I have a B.S. in Computer Science from The University of Texas at Austin and an M.S. in Bioinformatics from the University of Texas at Houston. My master’s thesis was centered on Neural Networks. I have been doing functional programming for the last 7 years starting with Haskell. My work is currently with F#, Microsoft’s new functional language for the .NET platform. My interests in programming are primarily in machine intelligence and pattern recognition. I have implemented applications in a number of contexts over the last 10 years including enterprise financial platforms, scientific applications in biology, virtual/augmented reality and most recently biometrics.

I am particularly interested in the near future of software development in industry. I believe the science of computing has produced some great fruit (particularly in the programming language domain) with which we have not effectively determined how to feed ourselves yet. Recent developments in functional programming especially have shed new light on the rapid development of reliable software. I see myself very much in the chasm of theory and practice in this regard, and hope this blog brings some very practical sense to these scientific achievements.

Hey, like your blog, dunno if you know me or not–I did the F# intro with Luke at TechEd last month, among other things.

I saw the link for the F# job in Austin; think they could use some consulting on that score? Would love to help out if I can–I want to see F# in use in the “real world”, and hey, money’s never a bad thing, either. :-)
